What is Voltaren Gel?

Voltaren Gel is a medication used to relieve joint pain caused by arthritis. Voltaren contains diclofenac and belongs to a class of drugs called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Diclofenac works by reducing substances in your body which cause pain and inflammation and is often applied to the hands, wrists, elbows, knees, ankles and feet. Voltaren Gel is available in a 1% strength, Voltaren Emulgel is available in 1.16% and Voltaren Emulgel Extra is available in 2.32% strength.

Always read the patient information and instructions carefully before using this medication. Follow your doctor’s directions.

• Squeeze the gel on to the supplied dosing card. Wipe the card directly onto the treatment area and then gently rub the gel into the skin.
• Do not apply Voltaren Gel to areas of infection, rashes, burns, peeling skin or open skin wounds. You should not cover treated skin with a bandage. Do not expose treated skin to heat from hot tubs, heating pads or saunas as heat or bandaging can increase the amount of diclofenac you absorb through your skin.
• Wash your hands after applying Voltaren Gel unless you are treating the skin on your hands. Wait at least ten minutes before dressing or wearing gloves and at least an hour before bathing or showering.
• Avoid drinking alcohol, aspirin or other NSAIDs while taking this medication.

Make sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• If you have any drug or other allergies.
• Which other prescription and non-prescription medications you currently take.
• Your medical history especially of asthma, heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, stomach ulcers, stomach bleeding, fluid retention, liver disease or kidney disease.

• You should not breast feed while using this medication.

Common Voltaren Gel side effects may include but are not limited to:

• Skin redness or irritation where applied.

Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following side effects of diclofenac:

• Raised blood pressure.
• Signs of liver damage such as dark urine, jaundice, loss of appetite, persistent nausea, persistant vomiting, stomach pain or abdominal pain.
• Signs of kidney problems such as changes in your amount of urine.
• Signs of heart failure such as unusual tiredness, unusual or sudden weight gain or a swelling to your ankles or feet.
• Signs of an allergic reaction such as hives, difficulty breathing or a swelling of your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Voltaren Gel?

If you miss a dose of this medication, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.

Can I use other skin products while using Voltaren Gel?

Do not use cosmetics, sunscreen, lotions, insect repellant, or other medicated skin products on the same area you treat with Voltaren Gel.
