What are Flovent Inhalers?

Flovent Inhalers are used to prevent the symptoms of asthma such as breathing difficulties, chest tightness, coughing and wheezing. Flovent contains the medication fluticasone which is a corticosteroid and works by decreasing swelling and irritation in the airways which makes breathing easier. Flovent is not a rescue medication and should not be used to relieve asthma attacks.

Always read the patient information and instructions carefully before using this medication. Follow your doctor’s directions.

  • Flovent should be inhaled orally. Shake the inhaler well for five seconds before each use. This medication is usually taken once or twice a day.
  • After using this medication, rinse your mouth with water without swallowing. This will reduce the chance of developing a yeast infection.
  • Your doctor may start you on an average dose of fluticasone and change it after monitoring your improvements. Your Flovent dosage may need to be changed if you are ill, have surgery, are under stress or if you have recently had an asthma attack. Do not change your dosage or schedule without speaking to a doctor.
  • If you are using this medication for the first time, if you have not used it in a week or if your inhaler has been dropped, you will need to prime your inhaler by spraying it away from your face.
  • Your symptoms may improve after 24 hours but can take up to two weeks before you feel the full benefit. Tell your doctor if your condition does not improve after two weeks of using this medication.

Cautions

Make sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist:

  • If you have any drug or other allergies.
  • Which other prescription and non-prescription medications you currently take.
  • Your medical history especially of tuberculosis in your lungs, cataracts, glaucoma, liver disease, any untreated infection on your body or herpes eye infections.
  • Your personal and family history of osteoporosis.
  • If you smoke or use tobacco products.

  • If you have never had chickenpox or measles and you have not been vaccinated against these. You should stay away from people who have infections, especially these.

Also be aware that:

  • You should not use Flovent Inhalers during an asthma attack. Your doctor should also prescribe you a short acting inhaler.
  • You should tell your doctor or dentist that you use this medication or any other corticosteroid before any surgery, dental surgery or emergency procedures.
  • Fluticasone can sometimes cause wheezing and breathing difficulties immediately after being inhaled. If this occurs, use your rescue inhaler and contact your doctor. Do not use Flovent again until you have spoken to your doctor.
