What is Zoloft?

Zoloft contains sertraline and is an antidepressant which is prescribed to treat depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Sertraline is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) which affects serotonin, a natural chemical in the brain which may be unbalanced. Taking sertraline can improve your energy levels, mood, sleep and appetite and can restore your interest in daily living.

Always read the patient information and instructions carefully before using this medication. Follow your doctor’s directions.

  • Take sertraline with or without food at the same time each day.
  • It may take four weeks before your symptoms improve. Continue taking Zoloft as directed. Tell your doctor if your symptoms do not improve.
  • Do not stop taking sertraline suddenly or you may have withdrawal symptoms. Ask your doctor how to safely stop taking this medication.
