What is Yasmin?

Yasmin (drospirenone/ethinylestradiol) is a combination birth control pill used to prevent pregnancy. Yasmin contains female hormones which prevents ovulation and causes changes to your cervical mucus and uterine lining which makes it harder for sperm to reach the uterus and harder for the fertilized egg to attach to the uterus. In addition to preventing pregnancy, Yasmin may be used to make your periods more regular, decrease blood loss and painful periods and decrease your risk of ovarian cysts.

Always read the patient information and instructions carefully before using this medication. Follow your doctor’s directions.

  • Yasmin should be taken orally with or without food and is typically taken once daily. Take Yasmin at the same time each day, 24 hours apart. Taking Yasmin after your evening meal or at bedtime can help decrease stomach upset and nausea.
  • Start with the first tablet in the pack and take them in the correct order without skipping any doses. Pregnancy is more likely if you miss pills, start a pack late or take your pill at a different time than usual.
  • Yasmin 21 contains 21 pills with active medication. Yasmin 28 contains 21 pills with active medication plus 7 reminder pills which do not contain hormones.
  • For Yasmin 28, take an active pill for 21 consecutive pills and then take a reminder pill for the next 7 days. You should have your period within 3 days of taking your last active tablet. Start your next pack after the last reminder pill whether or not you have had your period. If you haven’t had your period, consult with your doctor.
  • For Yasmin 21, take an active pill for 21 consecutive pills and then do not take any tablets for the next 7 days. You should have your period within 3 days of taking your last tablet. Start your next pack 7 days after taking your last pill whether or not you have had your period. If you haven’t had your period, consult with your doctor.
  • When using this medication for the first time, use an additional form of non-hormonal birth control until the medication has had enough time to work. If you start on the first day of your period, this is not necessary.
  • Yasmin is most effective when it is taken regularly. Try to take this medication at the same time each day. Tell your doctor if your condition does not improve or worsens.

Cautions

Make sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist:

  • If you have any drug or other allergies.
  • Which other prescription and non-prescription medications you currently take.
