What is Ventolin HFA Inhaler?

Albuterol (also known as salmeterol) and the brand name Ventolin HFA are inhalers used to prevent and treat shortness of breath, wheezing and other breathing problems caused by asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Ventolin is a quick-relief medication which opens your breathing passages and relaxing the muscles in your airways which makes breathing easier. This medication controls asthma and COPD symptoms but does not cure them.

Always read the patient information and instructions carefully before using this medication. Follow your doctor’s directions.

  • Ventolin HFA inhaler is usually taken every four to six hours as needed or 15-30 minutes before exercise.
  • Before your first use or if you have not used your inhaler in two weeks or longer, make sure that the canister is firmly inserted into the mouthpiece. Prime your inhaler by shaking it well and pressing down on the canister and releasing four test sprays into the air away from your face. You may also need to prime the inhaler if it has been dropped.
  • Shake your inhaler well and exhale completely through your mouth. Close your lips around the mouthpiece before breathing in slowly and deeply through the mouthpiece and press down on the container.
  • Hold your breath for ten seconds before removing the inhaler and breathing out slowly.
  • If your doctor prescribed you more than one puff, wait a minute before repeating these steps.
  • You should not use Ventolin when near a flame or a source of heat as this inhaler may explode when exposed to very high temperatures.
  • Keep a track of your inhalations and discard your inhaler once the labeled number of inhalations has been used.

FAQs

What is the Ventolin Inhaler generic alternative?

Generic Ventolin is known as Albuterol Inhaler and is available in the same 100 (90) mcg/dose strength.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Ventolin?

Use your inhaler to take your missed dose as soon as you remember it. If it is almost time for your next dose then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
