What is Synthroid?

Synthroid (Levothyroxine) is a medication used to treat hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism is a condition where the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone. Levothyroxine works by replacing the thyroid hormone which is normally produced by the body and can treat symptoms such as poor growth, constipation, weight gain, slow speech, hair loss, lack of energy, excessive tiredness, dry or thick skin, increased sensitivity to cold, muscle and joint pain, heavy or irregular menstrual periods and depression.

• Changes in your menstrual periods.
• Appetite changes or weight changes.
• Signs of an allergic reaction such as hives, difficulty breathing or a swelling of your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Synthroid?

If you miss a dose of this medication, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.

What should I avoid while taking Synthroid?

While taking Synthroid, you should avoid grapefruit juice, cotton seed meal, walnuts, soybean flower, instant soybean formula and other high fiber foods as these products may make your body absorb less medication.
