What is Progesterone?

Progesterone and the brand name Prometrium are female hormones that are important to regulate ovulation and menstruation. This medication is used to cause menstrual periods in women who are yet to reach menopause but are not having periods due to a lack of progesterone in their bodies. Prometrium may also be used to prevent overgrowth of the uterus lining in postmenopausal women receiving estrogen hormone replacement therapy.

Always read the patient information and instructions carefully before using this medication. Follow your doctor’s directions.

  • Prometrium capsules should be taken with a full glass of water.
  • Take progesterone at night as it can cause dizziness or drowsiness.
  • While taking this medication, you should self-examine your breasts on a monthly basis and have regular physical exams.
  • Follow your doctor’s dosing schedule carefully. It is sometimes only taken for a short time.
