What is Premarin?

Premarin Tablets (Conjugated Estrogen) is used to treat symptoms of menopause including vaginal dryness and hot flashes which are caused by the body making less estrogen. Cautions

  • Your medical history especially of hysterectomies, heart disease, heart attack, stroke, blood clots, cancer, kidney disease, asthma, epilepsy, liver problems, lupus, jaundice caused by pregnancy or taking hormones, gallbladder disease, seizures, migraines, endometriosis, angioedema, porphyria, thyroid disorders or high levels of calcium in the blood.
  • If you are breast feeding as estrogen can slow breast milk production.

Also be aware that:

  • Premarin must not be used if you are pregnant. Tell your doctor immediately if you become pregnant while taking this medication.
  • Taking Premarin may increase your risk of blood clots, heart attack or stroke. You are even more at risk if you are overweight, if you smoke or if you have diabetes high cholesterol or high blood pressure.
  • You should not smoke while taking Premarin. Smoking greatly increases your risk of heart attack, stroke or blood clots while taking conjugated estrogens.
  • You should avoid eating grapefruit and drinking grapefruit juice as these may interact with Premarin causing unwanted side effects.

Side effects of Premarin

Common Premarin side effects may include but are not limited to:

  • Stomach upset, nausea or vomiting.
  • Breast tenderness.
  • Headache.
  • Weight changes or bloating.

Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following side effects of Premarin:

  • Seeing the tablet in your stool.
  • Mental and mood changes such as depression, confusion or memory loss.
  • Breast lumps.
  • Unusual vaginal bleeding such as breakthrough bleeding, spotting, prolonged or recurrent bleeding.
  • New or increased vaginal discharge, odor, irritation or itching.
  • Severe stomach or abdominal pain, persistent nausea or vomiting.
  • Jaundice.
  • Increased thirst, urination or dark urine.
  • Swelling of your hands, ankles or feet.
  • Chest, jaw or left arm pain.
  • Unusual sweating.
  • Severe or sudden headache.
  • Weakness on one side of the body.
  • Slurred speech.
  • Vision changes such as partial or complete blindness.
  • Pain, swelling or redness in your legs.
  • Numbmess, weakness or tingling in your arms or legs.
  • Breathing problems.
  • Coughing up blood.
  • Sudden dizziness or fainting.
  • Signs of an allergic reaction such as hives, rashes, dizziness, difficulty breathing or itching or swelling of your face, lips or throat.
