What is Plaquenil?

Plaquenil contains hydroxychloroquine and is used to prevent and treat malaria infections caused by mosquito bites. Plaquenil can also be used to treat the symptoms of auto-immune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus when other medications cannot be used or have not worked.

• If you also take antacids (such as magnesium/aluminum hydroxide) or kaolin for diarrhea, take this medication at least four hours before or after these products to make sure that it is fully absorbed by your body.
• Plaquenil is most effective when it is taken regularly. When you are taking hydroxychloroquine for malaria, make sure to take it for the full length of time prescribed, even once you leave the affected area.
• When treating rheumatoid arthritis or lupus, it may take several weeks or months to see improvement.

Make sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• If you have any drug or other allergies.
• Which other prescription and non-prescription medications you currently take.
• Your medical history especially of eye problems, porphyria, a stomach disorder, diabetes, kidney disease, liver disease, skin problems or G-6 PD deficiency.

• Plaquenil is not approved for use by anyone younger than 18.

• This medication may make you dizzy. Do not drive, operate machinery or do anything else requiring alertness until it can be done safely.
• Hydroxychloroquine may make you more sensitive to sunlight. You should limit your time in the sun and wear protective clothing and use sunscreen. Avoid tanning booths and sunlamps

Common hydroxychloroquine side effects may include but are not limited to:

• Stomach pain, nausea or vomiting.
• Headaches or dizziness.
• Mood changes, nervousness or feeling irritable.
• Ringing in your ears.
• Weight loss or a loss of appetite.
• Skin rash, itching or hair loss.

Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following side effects of Plaquenil:

• Swelling or color changes in your eyes or vision changes such as trouble focusing, seeing light streaks or seeing flashes.
• Very slow heart rate or a weak pulse.
• Headaches with chest pain and severe dizziness, fainting or a fast or pounding heartbeat.
• Signs of low blood sugar such as headaches, irritability, hunger, dizziness, nausea, fast heart rate, sweating or feeling anxious or shaky.
• Signs of low blood cell counts such as swollen gums, mouth sores, skin sores, fever, chills, sore throat, weakness, feeling ill , rapid heart rate, pale skin, easy bruising, unusual bleeding or lightheadedness.
• Muscle weakness, tingling or numbness.
• Signs of an allergic reaction such as hives, difficulty breathing or a swelling of your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Plaquenil?

If you miss a dose of this medication, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.

How long does it take Plaquenil to treat arthritis?

When treating rheumatoid arthritis or lupus, Plaquenil may take several weeks or months to see improvement.
