What is Patanol Eye Drops?

Patanol (olopatadine) is a prescription medication available in the form of eye drops. Patanol is primarily used to treat eye allergies and allergic conjunctivitis. Patanol belongs to a class of drugs called antihistamines, which work by blocking the effects of histamine, a substance in the body that triggers allergic reactions.

When used as directed by a healthcare provider, Patanol eye drops can help relieve symptoms associated with eye allergies, such as itching, redness, tearing, and a burning sensation in the eyes.

It's essential to use Patanol eye drops as prescribed by your healthcare professional and to follow the dosing instructions carefully. If you experience severe eye symptoms or if your symptoms do not improve, you may need to see an eye specialist.

Patanol eye drops are typically used on the affected eye once daily. Use the eye drops as instructed to minimize the risk of side effects.

To use Patanol Eye Drops, follow these steps:

  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
  • Check the dropper tip to ensure it is not chipped or cracked.
  • While tilting your head back, pull down the lower lid of your eye with your index finger to form a pocket.
  • Hold the dropper with the other hand as close to the eye as possible without touching it.
  • While looking up, gently squeeze the dropper so that a single drop falls into the pocket made by the lower eyelid. Remove your index finger from the lower eyelid.
  • Close your eyes for 2 to 3 minutes and tip your head down as though looking at the floor. Try not to blink or squeeze your eyelids.
  • Place a finger on the tear duct and apply gentle pressure.
  • Wipe any excess liquid from your face with a tissue.
  • Replace and tighten the cap on the dropper bottle. Do not wipe or rinse the dropper tip.
  • Wash your hands to remove any medication.

Patanol Eye Drops Cautions

Before using Patanol eye drops, discuss with your doctor any known allergies or sensitivities, as well as your medical history and current medications. If you wear contact lenses, remove them before applying Patanol and wait for at least 10 minutes before reinserting them to prevent potential irritation.

Additionally, inform your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, as the safety of olopatadine in pregnant women and nursing mothers is not established. If you experience any disturbances to your vision, avoid activities like driving until your vision returns to normal.

Patanol Eye Drops Side Effects

Patanol does not cause side effects for everyone. However, some common side effects may include:

  • Eye pain or changes in vision;
  • Eye itching that gets worse or lasts longer than 72 hours;
  • Severe burning, stinging, or irritation after using this medicine; or
  • Eye swelling, redness, severe discomfort, crusting or drainage.

This is not a complete list of side effects. Contact your doctor for a comprehensive Patanol side effects list. If one or more of the above side effects occur, call your healthcare provider right away.
