What is Nexium?

Nexium (Esomeprazole) is a proton pump inhibitor medication which is used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other stomach acid and esophagus conditions. Esomeprazole works by decreasing the amount of acid produced by the stomach which can help to relieve symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, persistent cough or heartburn.

Always read the patient information and instructions carefully before using this medication. Follow your doctor’s directions.

  • Nexium should be taken orally with a full glass of water and at least an hour before a meal.
  • Do not crush or chew capsules, If you struggle to swallow Nexium whole, you may open the capsule and sprinkle the medication onto applesauce or pudding before swallowing immediately without chewing.
  • Esomeprazole may affect the results of medical tests. Tell any doctor or dentist that treats you that you take Nexium.
  • You should use Nexium for the full prescribed amount of time, even if your symptoms have improved.
  • It is usually prescribed for between four and eight weeks although your doctor may then recommend further treatment. Tell your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.

Cautions

Make sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist:

  • If you have any drug or other allergies.
  • Which other prescription and non-prescription medications you currently take.
  • Your medical history especially of liver disease osteoporosis, autoimmune disease, systemic lupus, or low levels of magnesium in your blood.
  • If you are pregnant, planning on pregnancy or breast feeding.

Also be aware that:

  • This medication can affect the results of certain medical tests. Tell any doctor who treats you that you take this medication.
  • If you are taking a proton pump inhibitor medication such as Nexium more than once daily or for an extended period, you may be more likely to break a bone. Talk to your doctor about ways to keep your bones healthy.
  • Heartburn can mimic early symptoms of heart attack. Get medical assistance if you have a chest pain which spreads to your shoulder and jaw and you feel light-headed or anxious.

Nexium Side Effects

Common Nexium side effects may include but are not limited to:

  • Headache.
  • Abdominal pain.

Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following side effects of Nexium:

  • Signs of a low magnesium level such as persistent muscle spasms, seizures or a fast, slow or irregular heartbeat.
  • Signs of lupus such as new or worsening joint pain or a rash on the cheeks and nose.
  • Persistent diarrhea, fever, blood or mucus in your stool, abdominal pain or cramping. Do not use anti-diarrhea or opioid medications if these symptoms occur.
  • Signs of a vitamin B-12 deficiency such as weakness, sore tongue or a numbness in the hands or feet. The risk of this is increased if you have been taking esomeprazole or other proton pump inhibitor for 3 years or longer.
  • Signs of an allergic reaction such as hives, difficulty breathing or a swelling of your face, lips or throat.

We have had very good service from the Canada Pharmacy Depot, obtaining a very expensive medication (in the USA) for the very same medication from India for a fraction of the US cost ($488/3mo supply vs $1400/1mo supply). This has been a godsend bc my husband has Parkinson's Disease and takes many medications to manage his condition. It does take longer to get the medication, but you just have to plan ahead for significant savings.
