What is Lexapro?

Lexapro is an antidepressant medication containing the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) escitalopram. Escitalopram is used to treat major depressive disorder and anxiety by affecting the natural chemical serotonin in the brain which may be unbalanced. This can lead to improved feelings of well-being, improved energy levels and decreased feelings of nervousness.

Always read the patient information and instructions carefully before using this medication. Follow your doctor’s directions.

  • You can take Lexapro either with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day.
  • Do not change your Lexapro dosage or the frequency that you take it unless you have been advised by your doctor.
  • Continue taking Lexapro as directed. It may take up to four weeks before your symptoms improve.
