What is Janumet?

Janumet (sitagliptin/metformin) is a diabetes medication which helps to control blood sugar levels. Metformin decreases the production of glucose in the liver and the absorption of glucose by your intestines. Sitagliptin regulates the levels of insulin which is produced by your body after eating. Janumet is used in people with type 2 diabetes and should be taken as part of a treatment plan including diet and exercise.

Always read the patient information and instructions carefully before using this medication. Follow your doctor’s directions.

  • Janumet tablets should be swallowed whole with meals. You should not chew, crush or break these tablets.
  • Part of a Janumet tablet may appear in your stool. This is normal and does not make the medication less effective, but call your doctor if you see this several times.
  • Watch for signs of high or low blood sugar while taking this medication.
  • Janumet should be taken as part of a treatment plan which may include diet, exercise, regular sugar testing, weight control and special medical care.

Cautions

Make sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist:

  • If you have any drug or other allergies.
  • Which other prescription and non-prescription medications you currently take, especially if you take other diabetes medications.
  • Your medical history especially of kidney disease, liver disease, heart disease, high triglycerides, pancreatitis or gallstones.
  • Your present and past use of alcohol.
  • If you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breast feeding. Your dosage may need to be altered.

Also be aware that:

  • You may need to stop taking Janumet temporarily if you will be having surgery, X-rays or CT scans. Inform all of your doctors that you take this medication.
  • Taking Janumet can cause lactic acidosis. This is more likely if you are over 65, dehydrated, drink a lot of alcohol or if you have liver disease, kidney disease, congestive heart failure, a stroke, heart attack or severe infection. Ask your doctor for more information.
  • Janumet is not approved to be used by anyone younger than 18.
