Glucophage XR is a prescription medicine used to treat to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. 

While on Glucophage XR, follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Use the medicine exactly as directed. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose.

Usually, take Glucophage XR with a meal unless your doctor tells you otherwise. Some forms of Glucophage XR are taken only once daily with the evening meal. Do not crush, chew, or break an extended-release tablet. Swallow it whole.

Some tablets are made with a shell that is not absorbed or melted in the body. Part of this shell may appear in your stool. It is normal and will not make the medicine less effective.

Before taking Glucophage XR, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of:

• Severe breathing problems (such as obstructive lung disease and severe asthma).
• Blood problems (such as anemia and vitamin B12 deficiency).
• Kidney disease.
• Liver disease.
• If you are allergic to it; or have any other allergies. 

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Common side effects of Glucophage XR may include:

• Low blood sugar;
• Nausea, upset stomach; or
• Diarrhea.

Can you drink alcohol while taking Glucophage XR?

While taking Glucophage XR, recommended not to drink a lot of alcoholic drinks. It means you should not binge drink for short periods, and you should not drink a lot of alcohol regularly.

What are Glucophage XR side effects?

Nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, diarrhea, weakness, or a metallic taste in the mouth may occur.
