What is Diamicron?

Diamicron is an oral hypoglycemic medication that helps control blood glucose levels in type 2 diabetes patients. Diamicron is only prescribed when the traditional forms of blood sugar control, like a healthy diet and regular exercise, do not yield the desired results. The main ingredient of Diamicron is known as gliclazide, also the name of its generic form.

Type 2 diabetes is a prevalent condition in the United States and can cause long-term damage to the body, like vascular problems, heart attack, and stroke. Excessively high blood sugar in the bloodstream damages blood vessels, and if blood cannot reach all the areas of the body, tissue can die.

To avoid these complications, Diamicron can be used to regulate blood sugar levels by encouraging the production of insulin from the pancreas. Along with insulin production, Diamicron also helps the body use insulin more efficiently.

Diamicron is an oral medication that is taken with a full glass of water. When you are prescribed Diamicron, always take the drug as exactly as prescribed from your doctor or pharmacist. The dosage for most patients is two to four tablets daily. If you take two doses, you may want to take one dose with breakfast and one with dinner.

Typically, diabetes medication is a lifelong treatment, and you may have to take gliclazide tablets for a lifetime. Please do not stop taking Diamicron suddenly because it can make your diabetes worse. A study through the University Medical Centre Groningen in the Netherlands found that long-term gliclazide is safe to take. The researchers compiled 19 trials with 3,083 patients with type 2 diabetes. At the end of the study, the number of low blood pressure events was low, and there was no effect on the pancreas with prolonged use. [1]

What to know before taking Diamicron

Diamicron is not approved for all type 2 diabetes patients. This drug is only prescribed once other medications do not yield beneficial results. You may not be able to take this drug if you have any of the following:

•    Type 1 diabetes
•    Unstable diabetes
•    Ketoacidosis
•    Severely reduced kidney function
•    Reduced liver function
•    You take miconazole
•    You are allergic to sulfonylureas

Drinking alcohol with gliclazide can cause an intolerance reaction, leading to unpleasant symptoms like flushing, nausea, and a fast heart rate. Low blood sugar is always a risk with insulin-stimulating medications. When a large amount of insulin is introduced into the body, it can cause low hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), causing serious symptoms like:

•    Dizziness
•    Fatigue
•    Headache
•    Fainting
•    Weakness

Diamicron Side Effects

If prescribed Diamicron, you have unstable blood sugar levels and require intervention. Your doctor determined the drug's benefits outweigh the potential side effects, but you should remain aware of side effects. Common side effects include:

•    Constipation
•    Nausea
•    Vomiting
•    Diarrhea
•    Heartburn
•    Joint pain
•    Increased skin sensitivity to the sun

Serious side effects are unlikely, but if you experience blurred vision, cold sweats, confusion, signs of liver problems, anxiousness, and unexpected weight gain, tell your doctor right away. If you want to save money on your Diamicron prescription, visit a Canadian online pharmacy today.

FAQs

Can you overdose on Diamicron?

It is essential to take your prescribed dose; if you take too much, you can experience low blood sugar. This is dangerous, so avoid taking too much medication at once.

What are common dosages of Diamicron?

Your doctor will tailor your dosage to your condition. The maximum daily dose of standard gliclazide is 320 mg. This dose will be broken up into two doses throughout the day. If you take slow-release gliclazide, the maximum daily dose is 120 mg.

What happens if you forget a dose of gliclazide?

If you forgot one of your doses, take it as soon as possible. If it is close to your next dose, do not double up because it can cause low blood sugar.

Can you breastfeed when taking Diamicron?

Diamicron passes into the breast milk, so it can pass to the baby. Regulating blood sugar levels is essential, so ensure your doctor advises you on breastfeeding safety.
