What is Prednisone?

Prednisone, also known as Deltasone is a corticosteroid medication which is used to treat many different conditions including skin conditions, ulcerative colitis, arthritis, breathing disorders, allergic disorders, lupus and psoriasis. Prednisone suppresses your immune system and prevents the release of substances in the body which cause inflammation.

Also be aware that:

• Prednisone and other steroid medications may weaken your immune system making it easier to catch an infection. Avoid people who have infections or are sick. Do not receive a “live” vaccination while taking this medication.
• Long-term use of steroids may cause bone loss. This is more likely if you have a family history of osteoporosis, if you smoke, do not exercise or do not get enough calcium or vitamin D in your diet.
• Steroids may affect growth in children. Monitor children’s growth carefully.

• Mental or mood changes such as depression, agitation or mood swings.
• Swelling of the hands, ankles or feet.
• Signs of infection such as fever or persistent sore throat.
• Weakness.
• Slow wound healing.
• Thinning skin.
• Bone pain.
• Irregular heartbeat.
• Vision problems such as blurred vision.
• Menstrual period changes.
• Easy bruising or bleeding.
• Puffy face.
• Seizures.
• Signs of an allergic reaction such as hives, difficulty breathing or a swelling of your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of prednisone?

If you miss a dose of this medication, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.
