What is Colchicine?

Colcrys (colchicine) is a medication which is used to prevent and to treat attacks of gout. Gout is caused by too much uric acid in the blood as when uric acid levels become too high, it may cause the acid to form hard crystals in your joints. Colchicine works by lessoning the buildup of uric acid crystals which cause pain. Colchicine may also be used to treat familial Mediterranean fever (FMF).

Colchicine is not a pain relief medication and it should not be used to relieve other causes of pain.

• Take colchicine orally either with or without food.
• The recommended dose for a gout attack is 1.2mg at the first sign of attack and then another 0.6mg an hour later. 1.8mg is the maximum recommended dose for an hour period.
• The usual dose when preventing FMF pain is 1.2 to 2.4mg daily. Your doctor may direct you to take this in one or two doses.
• Your colchicine dosage is based on your medical condition, response to treatment and other food or drugs you may take. Do not change your dose or frequency unless advised by a doctor.
• Avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice while taking colchicine.

Make sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• If you have any drug or other allergies.
• Which other prescription and non-prescription medications you currently take.
• Your medical history especially of liver disease or kidney disease.
• If you are pregnant, planning on pregnancy or breast feeding.

Also be aware that:

• Alcohol can decrease the effectiveness of colchicine. Limit your alcohol intake while taking this medication.
• Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of colchicine.

Common Colchicine side effects may include but are not limited to:

• Nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain or vomiting.

Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following side effects of Colchicine:

• Muscle pain, weakness or tiredness.
• Severe or ongoing diarrhea.
• Easy bruising or unusual bleeding.
• A numbness or tingly feeling in your fingers or toes.
• Flu symptoms such as fever, body aches or chills.
• A pale or gray appearance of the hands, lips or tongue.
• Signs of an allergic reaction such as hives, difficulty breathing or a swelling of your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Colchicine?

If you miss a dose of this medication, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose. Do not take extra medication to make up for a missed dose.
