What is Breo Ellipta?

Breo Ellipta is a combination inhaler containing fluticasone and vilanterol which is used to treat adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) to improve symptoms and prevent attacks. Fluticasone is a corticosteroid and vilanterol is a long-acting beta agonist. Both drugs work to reduce swelling in the airways of the lungs making breathing easier. Breo Ellipta must be used regularly to be effective and is not a rescue inhaler to relieve sudden asthma attacks.

Always read the patient information and instructions carefully before using this medication. Follow your doctor’s directions.

  • Breo Ellipta is a powder which comes in blister packs preloaded in a special inhalation device. Each time you use the inhaler, the device loads a blister of this medication.
  • If you use any other inhalers, wait at least a minute between each medication using Breo Ellipta last.
  • After using this inhaler, rinse your mouth with water to prevent thrush.
  • Discard your device when the indicator shows a zero or six weeks after removing it from the foil pouch.
  • Breo Ellipta must be used regularly to be effective and is not a rescue inhaler to relieve sudden asthma attacks. Breo Ellipta should not be used more than once in a 24 hour period.

  • Breo Ellipta is not approved to be used by anyone younger than 18.
  • Long term use of this medication can cause osteoporosis. This risk is increased if you have a family history of osteoporosis or if you smoke, do not exercise or do not get enough calcium or vitamin D in your diet.
