What is Bactrim?

Bactrim is a combination medication containing sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim which is prescribed to treat a variety of bacterial infections including intestinal, respiratory, middle ear or urine infections as well as a certain type of pneumonia. Bactrim should only be used to treat bacterial infections and will not work for viral infections. Unnecessary use of antibiotics may lead to a decrease in their effectiveness.

Always read the patient information and instructions carefully before using this medication. Follow your doctor’s directions.

  • Bactrim should be taken by mouth with a full glass of water. Bactrim may also be taken with food or milk to prevent stomach upset.
  • Drink plenty of water while taking this medication to lower the risk of kidney stones.
  • Take this antibiotic at evenly spaced times. Try to take the medication at the same time each day.
  • Continue taking this medication for the full prescription even if symptoms have disappeared. Stopping taking Bactrim early may allow bacteria to continue growing which could result in a relapse.
