What is Dexilant?

Dexilant (dexlansoprazole) is a proton pump inhibitor used to treat stomach and esophagus problems such as erosive esophagitis and heartburn caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Dexilant decreases stomach acid which relieves symptoms such as heartburn, persistent cough or difficulty swallowing.

Always read the patient information and instructions carefully before using this medication. Follow your doctor’s directions. Dexilant is a once-daily oral medication that you can take with or without food. If you usually have GERD symptoms after a meal, then you may take Dexilant before the same meal each day. Take Dexilant at the same time each day to get the best results.

Take Dexilant capsules whole without chewing or crushing the capsules. If you struggle to swallow Dexilant, open the capsule and sprinkle the contents onto a tablespoon of applesauce and then swallow the mixture immediately without swallowing. Do not change your dosage or the frequency you take this medication unless advised by a doctor.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist:

  • If you have any drug or other allergies.
  • About any prescription and non-prescription medications you currently take.
  • If you have a medical history of lupus or liver disease.
  • If you are breastfeeding because it is unknown if Dexilant passes into breastmilk.

Also be aware that:

  • The risk of side effects increases over time. Ask your doctor how long you should take this medication.
  • Proton pump inhibitors such as Dexilant may increase your risk of bone fractures. This risk is higher in older adults, or when the medication is taken for a longer period of time or in higher doses. Talk to your doctor about ways to prevent bone loss or fractures.
  • Older adults may experience side effects of Dexilant more frequently.
  • This medication should only be taken when clearly needed during pregnancy.

Side effects of Dexilant

Common Dexilant side effects may include but are not limited to:

  • Diarrhea

Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following side effects of Dexilant:

  • Fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat

  • Signs of lupus such as new or worsening joint pain or a rash on the nose and cheeks

  • Signs of a vitamin B-12 deficiency such as weakness, sore tongue or a numbness in the hands or feet
  • Signs of an allergic reaction such as hives, difficulty breathing or a swelling of your face, lips or throat

What should I do if I miss a dose of Dexilant?

If you miss a dose of this medication, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.

What should I avoid while taking Dexilant?

Dexilant can cause diarrhea which could be a sign of a new infection. If you have watery or bloody diarrhea, do not use anti-diarrhea medication. Speak to your doctor if this happens.

How should I store in Dexilant?

It is essential to keep Dexilant away from other people and animals in your household. Keeping your prescription away from light and excessive moisture. If you need to dispose of expired Dexilant, do not flush it down the toilet. Most local pharmacies have prescription disposal services if you have any other questions.

Never take more Dexilant than detailed in your treatment plan. If you take more Dexilant than prescribed, contact poison control or local emergency services.

Are there any drug interactions with Dexilant?

Before starting Dexilant, tell your physician about any supplements or prescription medications you take. Dexilant may interact with herbal supplements like St. John’s wort. Methotrexate and HIV medications like rilpivirine may cause interactions with Dexilant.
